What a gathering it was! On Sunday 10 May, community composters from across Australia (and beyond) came together online to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week 2026. The energy, knowledge-sharing, and sense of solidarity that emerged from the session were palpable.
If you missed the convergence or want to revisit the inspiring conversations, watch the full recording here:

Highlights from the Session:
Michael Kennard: Lessons from the UK
We were honoured to hear from Michael Kennard from Compost Club in East Sussex, UK. Michael shared insights from years of composting at the community scale, with both practical wisdom and a broader vision. His experience building and sustaining community composting systems was both inspirational and relevant to the Australian context.

YIMBY’s FOGO Petition
Mikaela from YIMBY Composters made an urgent call for their council to reconsider the rollout of FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) kerbside collection in their area. YIMBY has built a highly successful community composting program that keeps nutrients cycling locally, builds community connection, and delivers environmental and social benefits that centralised collection can’t match.
They’re asking the council to hold off on FOGO to allow their community composting program to reach its full potential. This is a critical conversation happening in communities across Australia and the world.
