The LOCCAL Loop newsletter: May, 2026

Big month is May as it brings International Compost Awareness Week (3rd – 9th May) highlighting the National and indeed International importance of supporting composting whenever organic materials have no other use.

This year’s compost poster was won by Endurance Oye of Mowe, Ogun State, Nigeria as the 2026 ICAW Poster Contest winner. Endurance’s poster was selected from hundreds of entries submitted by artists around the world and stood out for its depth, storytelling, and powerful connection to this year’s theme: Compost! Feed the Soil That Feeds Us.

This month then is a great time for us to promote Community Composting to ensure the greatest participation, benefits and enjoyment can occur as close as possible to where plants and foods are grown and consumed – for the good of our own welfare as well as the rest of the planet we share with everyone and everything.

Loccal was formed two years ago to promote Community Composting – really all home and decentralised composting efforts – but in particular where materials are sought / accepted from beyond any one household, or where public composting occurs as in community gardens / accessible shared spaces / compost hubs. Loccal allows us to witness, learn from, or emulate the hundreds of examples of community composting across Australia – in dense cities, other suburbs, regional towns and farmlands.

Community Composting maximises participation and knowledge transfer in making and sustaining composting and the creation of truly circular economy – indeed to help us be stewards of Nature’s Economy.

In addition to promoting events during ICAW, Loccal is hosting a National Community Composters Convergence! – Celebrating International Compost Awareness Week.

Join composters from across Australia for an inspiring online gathering to close out International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) 2026!
