Community Composting with Clytie Binder and Morag Gamble Sense-Making in a Changing World (Australia)
In this second International Women’s Series conversation, Clytie Binder joins Morag Gamble in discussing her Churchill Fellowship research on composting and the hyperlocal systems she has observed around the world. SBS featuring YIMBY in 2024 (Australia)
YIMBY is short for ‘yes in my backyard’. It’s a community-run, backyard composting scheme that was founded in 2020 in Castlemaine, Victoria. To organisers’ knowledge, there’s no other program like it in Australia. Co-founder Lucy Young says YIMBY is a way of “sharing high-level composting skills with lots of keen composters, and supporting them to run micro-processing hubs at home.” Joel Meadows, the other co-founder, explains the approach as super small scale and super local, with “low carbon input and low carbon output.” Hear about the potential of schemes like this to help build resilient communities.
Urban Community Composting with the Denver Compost Collective, The Poor Proles Almanac (USA)
“We’re joined by the Denver Compost Collective to discuss the concept of urban composting and utilizing compost as a tool for building community. How can we leverage our mutual understanding of the importance of soil health and local, healthy food to build inroads with our neighbors? And more importantly, how can their model be replicated across urban spaces globally? The Denver Compost Collective provides a weekly compost collection service for apartment dwellers. Building Community through Community Composting with Michael Martinez of LA Compost – No-Till Growers Podcasts (USA)
Michael Martinez is the founder and executive director of LA Compost. He has chosen compost as a way to show his care for humanity and build a healthy community. His work has been incredibly impactful. LA Compost now has a diverse network of 41 community composting locations across LA county. I heard Michael speak at the US Compost Conference last Winter. He often brings people to happy tears as he speaks from the heart about his love of compost. Hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. How household behaviour can reduce food waste – ABC Radio National (Australia)
Each year Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food. That’s about 312kg per person. And if that figure isn’t jarring enough… then how about this one: This waste can cost up to $2,500 per household per year. But with the help of a community composting group called YIMBY (Yes In My Back Yard) I have become a kitchen scrap saviour, a leaf collecting ninja and I make steaming hot compost. In today’s episode I talk to Lucy Young, Joel Meadows, Mikaela Beckley and Claudia Lang about what this group is all about and why they are passionate about compost. (Spoiler: reducing greenhouse gasses, connecting community, building beautiful soil)

Thank you to all who signed the petition, sorry to those who wanted to but didn’t get the opportunity. We made the decision to lodge the petition before last weeks Councillor FOGO briefing, plus we needed to get back to supporting our composters, and training more.
Our hope is that our Councillors will hear this request from their community and delay the rollout of the planned FOGO service. We hope they will see this as an opportunity to draw on the expertise, knowledge and creative energy of this community to truly collaborate on designing a fit-for-purpose response to dealing with our organics in this shire.
The way we do this really matters.
Many in our community are concerned our local garden organics service Greenaway has flagged their intention to close their business at the end of the year. Listen to the latest episode of the Saltgrass podcast to hear Anthony from Greenaway speak about this decision.
World-wide there are many cautionary tales of the devastating effect the rollout of a FOGO system can have on thriving community composting initiatives. Listen to Andrew McCarthy on A Pocket Full of Change talk about the impact of FOGO on South Melbourne Sustainability Group’s community composting project and the irony of their council now funding them to attempt to revive it.
Composted Artefacts Exhibition
Dr Ernie Harbott of Compost Culture and local compost comrades put together a small but thought-provoking collection of composted items to raise awareness this International Compost Awareness Week. The items were on display in the foyer of the Singleton Public Library during May.
