“No Garbage: Composting and Recycling” by Allen Gilbert, 1992
I was so impressed by this book when I started reading it that I had to check the publication date. At 30 years of age, this book is as relevant and useful as it was when it was first published as part of an Australian Garden series by Lothian Publishing. This short manual is a comprehensive and accurate guide to recycling garden waste for compost. It includes tips on different methods, aeration, worms, problems, weeds and pests, and soil structure.

But there’s also commentary on what more should be done by councils, social responsibility, and sustainable practices. There’s some history and future innovation – still, sadly just a distant future, 30 years on. You might be able to pick this up at your local library (in their bargain bin for sale?) or on eBay for a good price. Whatever you pay for it, it’ll be worth every cent.
