DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces the practicalities of establishing and maintaining a school garden using permaculture practices and principles. It also covers ways in which the Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priority area of Sustainability can be addressed and be applied to Learning Areas including Science\, English\, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Arts. It is for teachers and school community members who are wanting to establish new gardens\, or who already have gardens that you are wanting to rejuvenate. These strategies can be applied for any budget that the school has for a garden. \n\n\n\nNorthey Street City Farm Windsor QLD\, Australia \n\n\n\nWe will cover: \n\n\n\n\nAn introduction to permaculture practice and design\n\n\n\nDesigning your school garden\n\n\n\nThe resources you need and how to get them\n\n\n\nUnderstanding and improving your soil\, including composting and worm farming\n\n\n\nGrowing for the subtropics – appropriate plants for the SEQ climate\n\n\n\nLinking garden activities to the curriculum\n\n\n\nMaking it work for your school community – Involving your students; how to get different members of the community involved; how to manage your gardens over school holidays\, and more!\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive access to a resources pack and a certificate for 6 hours of professional development. \n\n\n\nPrimary school teachers are the main audience for this workshop. School leaders\, members of P&Cs and groundstaff are all welcome to attend. \n\n\n\nThe content relates particularly to sections 2.1\, 2.2\, 2.3\, 3.1\, 3.2\, 3.3\, 3.4\, 4.1 and 4.2 of the Australian professional standards for teachers. \n\n\n\nAbout the presenters: \n\n\n\nJenny Kato is a passionate advocate for regenerative agriculture\, a permaculture practitioner and designer\, and an avid gardener. Jenny teaches on the Permaculture Design Certificate Courseat Northey Street City Farm where she also runs a range of workshops. Jenny has her own design business\, Living Patterns Permaculture\, and has worked with many schools designing school gardens. \n\n\n\nEmma Brindal is the founder of WiseEarth Education and has been teaching and facilitating experiential learning and environmental education programs for over a decade. She also works at Northey Street City Farm\, where she has developed and run a range of permaculture and sustainability activities and programs for children and adults. This is followed by a demonstration of setting up and maintaining a worm farm. \n\n\n\nResidents and ratepayers of the City are entitled to a $130 subsidy on an advanced worm farm set-up and/or a $65 subsidy on 1kg of worms\, both of which will be available for purchase on the day. \n\n\n\nWorm Farm Subsidy \n\n\n\nThe City of Swan offers residents and ratepayers a subsidy to get your worm farm going! Worm farming is a simple way of converting food scraps and other organic materials into nutrient rich products for the garden. \n\n\n\nAdvanced setup: \n\n\n\n\nA ‘Worm Café’ worm farm including approximately 4\,000 worms (1kg)\, 15 litres of castings for bedding\, 500g dolomite\, a worm blanket and a comprehensive instruction booklet.\n\n\n\nUnit cost is $260\, subsidy is $130 and your price to pay is $130.\n\n\n\n\nWorms only: \n\n\n\n\n1kg of worms.\n\n\n\nUnit cost is $130\, subsidy is $65 and your price to pay is $65.\n\n\n\nYou may purchase a larger quantity of worms\, but the maximum subsidy for worms only is $65.\n\n\n\n\nTo claim the subsidy: \n\n\n\nCollect your worm farm to take home\, set up and enjoy. \n\n\n\nPre-order your worm farm when you RSVP for a City of Swan worm farming workshop. \n\n\n\nAttend the workshop with proof of your address or a rates notice. \n\n\n\nPay in cash. \n\n\n\nDayton Community Centre211 Arthur St\, Dayton WA 6055\, Australia
