Connecting Australians to Local Composting Initiatives

A National Community Compost Map

More and more people across the country are recognising the value of locally run compost programs, which not only help reduce food waste but also nourish our soils and bring communities together. Today, we have launched a first for Australia: a interactive online map of community composting sites and organisations.

From community gardens and school programs to backyard projects, scout clubs, and small businesses offering subscription composting services, the range of community composting approaches are as diverse as our communities themselves. These projects all help divert organic waste from landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable practices at a grassroots level.

To support this growing movement, LOCCAL (The Local Community Compost Alliance) has created an online national map of community composting initiatives across Australia. This map serves as a one-stop resource for people who want to find their nearest community compost hub and start contributing to local composting efforts, or connect with other composters around the country. It illustrates the extent and diversity of community composting around the country, offering a visual representation of how widespread and what a significant force for positive change that community composting has become.

By making it easier for people to locate community compost hubs, LOCCAL aims to encourage greater participation in composting and inspire others to start their own initiatives. Whether you’re an individual, school, small business, or community organisation, we hope this resource can help you connect with like-minded people and tap into a larger, supportive network.

Want your initiative featured too?

If you’re involved in a community composting project and would like to see it included, LOCCAL invites you to share your details with us. Simply send the name of your composting initiative, address, a brief summary of the project, and a link to info@loccal.org.

We’re also happy to update any existing information if needed, and to make sure all the information is accurate and up-to-date.

Our goal is to map every community compost initiative across Australia, highlighting the power of collective action in building a sustainable future. Please help us grow this national resource by sharing it with others in your network, and making sure all of our amazing community efforts are being represented.

Thank you, Clytie, for the idea and now the action of this map and the actions that it will prompt to promote composting across Australia.
