Australia-wide
For the first time in Australia, existing and anticipated impacts from flooding, droughts, bushfires, and heat have been published by the federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Showing postcode by postcode what our suburbs and cities may expect and when. Now citizens may see the data in maps and websites. For example, in Melbourne during summer there will regularly be days hotter than 50 degrees.
The Assistant Minister for Climate Change, Josh Wilson MP will talk about the new data in an online conversation arranged by Renew and with the CEO there, Helen Oakey:

NSW
Clean Up Australia are hosting a webinar on Wednesday December 3rd all about minimising waste over the festive season. It’s free for the community to attend and bookings can be made at the following link:
The 45 minute session will be delivered by the amazing Annie Woollard, founder of Footprints on the Globe.
Folk from the Sustainable Chippendale Community will be there!
South Australia
Another street side compost example has popped up, this time on a street in Adelaide, South Australia.
Outside the Port Environment Centre and providing a welcome seat and productive garden, the local community funded the project.

Victoria
Melbourne City Council launched the trial of street furniture composting on 16 October 2025,and in the last week of November published a 2 minute 13 second video on their website of the launch and project here:

In what may be a first for small scale local composting the project website has live data (updated every 3 hours) on quantity and quality of compost in the three trial installations and its available to anyone visiting the website. The data will be collected through to about May 2026 producing some 6 or more months of data.
Western Australia

• Ecoburbia (Tim and Shani) have goats (for milk), sand sculptures by Tim, very productive house and street garden
One of Australia’s longest-running community composting and gardening examples at a house in Fremantle called, Ecoburbia, opened up the house and street gardens on Open Gardens day on 15 November. The website is loaded with valuable examples of composting, community, recycling clothing, gardening at the local level. Rewarding to follow.
Australian Capital Territory

This month Canberra City Farm will be celebrating World Soil Day by building a hot compost heap. If you are in Canberra on Dec 6 get your hands dirty and learn about their min-Indore hot-composting method. 10 am: build a hot compost heap. 12.30 pm: enjoy pizza!

Also in December, The Urban Farm in Maroochydore are holding a Compost Like a Pro workshop which includes composting, worm farming, worm towers, how to make leaf fungi soil, farm tour and Q & A gardening session.

Community composting around the world

Camila Soledad Roberto, student of Education Sciences, School of Humanities, National University of San Martín, Buenos Aires wrote an article about the ‘Compost Club‘ – a community composting network in the neighbourhood of Colegiales, Buenos Aires, Argentina. It describes how composting food scraps as a community can intertwine natural processes with local families, culture, international partnerships, mapping, education, multi-species connections, stories of the past and celebrations.
