YIMBY Composters has brought together a coalition of interested parties – including LOCCAL – to propose an innovative trial of an alternative organics cycling system for Mount Alexander Shire.

It has launched ‘Towards a home-grown, whole-of-shire organics system’, a costed plan that sets out how a locally designed system could handle the shire’s food and garden waste, and invites the council to collaborate with the Partnership to help test it before committing to the State Government’s FOGO rollout

The partnership has put $100,000 of community money behind the proposal and shared its plan with councillors. They hope to work with the council on shaping and co-funding the trial in the months ahead.

This locally tailored alternative that would expand existing community composting efforts while still handling the shire’s organic waste is collaborative, evidence-based, and a model for how grassroots composting initiatives can engage with local government to shape better policy.
